2.92mm of common RF connector

2.92mm coaxial connector is a new type of millimeter wave coaxial connector with inner diameter of outer conductor of 2.92mm and characteristic impedance of 50 Ω. This series of RF coaxial connectors was developed by Wiltron. Old in 1983 Field engineers have developed a new type of connector based on the previously launched millimeter wave connector, also known as K-type connector, or SMK, KMC, WMP4 connector.

The working frequency of the 2.92mm coaxial connector can reach 46GHz at the highest. The advantages of the air transmission line are used for reference, so that its VSWR is low and the insertion loss is small. Its structure is similar to 3.5mm/SMA connector, but the frequency band is faster and the volume is smaller. It is one of the most widely used millimeter wave connectors in the world. With the positioning of millimeter wave coaxial technology in military testing instruments in China, 2.92mm coaxial connectors have been widely used in radar engineering, electronic countermeasures, satellite communications, testing instruments and other fields.

Characteristic impedance: 50 Ω

Operating frequency: 0~46GHz

Interface basis: IEC 60169-35

Connector durability: 1000 times

As mentioned earlier, the interfaces of 2.92mm connector and 3.5mm/SMA connector are similar, because the compatibility with SMA and 3.5 type is fully considered in the design of the inner and outer conductor and end face dimensions of the connector.

As shown in Table 1, the dimensions of the male and female connectors of these three types of connectors are consistent, and in theory, they can be interconnected without transition. However, it should be noted that their outer conductor size, maximum frequency, insulating dielectric materials, etc. are quite different, so that transmission performance and test accuracy will be affected when different types of connectors are used for interconnection. It is also mentioned that the SMA male connector has low tolerance requirements for pin depth and pin extension. If the SMA male connector is inserted into a 3.5mm or 2.92mm female connector, long-term use will cause damage to the female connector, especially the damage to the connector of the calibration piece. Therefore, if different connectors are interconnected, such connection collocation should also be avoided as far as possible.
